Bell cote at the San Antonio de Pala Asistencia, Pala, circa 1888-1903
Description
The bell cote (bell gable, campanario, espadaña) at San Antonio de Pala Asistencia, which contains two bells, is unique among the California missions as a free-standing structure. The original bell cote was destroyed by torrential rains in 1916 and was replaced by a precise replica immediately. The Pala Mission was a sub-mission to Mission San Luis Rey de Francia, some twenty miles inland upstream from the mission on the San Luis Rey River. Mountains are visible in the background., Access to this collection is generously supported by Arcadia funds.
