Charles C. Pierce (1861-1946) was a pioneer Los Angeles photographer. He came to Los Angeles in 1886 from Chicago because of his health and remained until his death in 1946. Along with two other photographers who accompanied him, he began to document the people and architecture of the area. Collection consists of historic negatives and prints. Most are of Southern California scenes; Los Angeles is well represented with views of downtown streets, commercial and civic buildings, and residential areas., Access to this collection is generously supported by Arcadia funds.

Drawing by Edward Vischer of four California missions [drawings, circa 1870], Departed Mission Relics, rescued from oblivion by the strong early-life impressions, astounding memory, descriptive power and untiring obligingness of California's historian General Mar[iano] Guad[alupe] Vallejo. / Santa Cruz 1828, La Purisima in 1824, San Rafael, 1831, San Francisco Solano 1832 / Missions of Santa Cruz, Purissima, San Rafael and San Francisco Solano 1817/30 / Presumable appearance, by elevations from the respective Ground-plans, a most welcome contribution to complete this antiquarian Collection, a lasting memento from an interesting sojourn at Lachryma Montis, the General's congenial, truly arcadian home, October 10 to 15th of 1878.
