San Antonio de Pala Asistencia, bell cote, Pala, circa 1888-1903
Description
A view of the bell cote (bell gable, campanario, espadaña) from the back at San Antonio de Pala Asistencia. The bell cote is unique among the California missions as a free-standing structure. The original bell cote was destroyed by torrential rains in 1916 and was replaced by a precise replica immediately. The Pala Mission was a sub-mission to Mission San Luis Rey de Francia, some twenty miles inland upstream from the mission on the San Luis Rey River., Access to this collection is generously supported by Arcadia funds.
